ABOUT TRICHOLOGY & TRICHOLOGIST

Trichology is the medical term for the study for the hair (and scalp) and all problems related to them. A Trichologist is someone who specialises in hair loss problems such as hair thinning, hair breakage, baldness, telogen effluvium, alopecia and all scalp problems.

The condition of your hair is an indicator of your general health. Hair which is dull and lifeless can suggest a stressed, unhealthy lifestyle whereas hair which is full and shiny is a sign of being healthy. This is one of several factors when deciding upon suitable treatment.

Think of Trichologist as a "Hair Expert", as someone you may wish to consult instead of visiting your GP. If you choose to see a trichologist then you will have a thorough consultation - up to an hour long. Trichologist will discuss  all aspects of your lifestyle which includes your diet, stress and any other external factors as well as taking a full medical history.

And Trichologist will carry out an examination of your hair and scalp. In some cases, hair analysis must be done to assess the health of the growing hair bulbs or to check for structural damage and presence of lice or fungal infection. It is also not unusual for trichologist to request blood tests from your GP. Several factors considered by a trichologist when deciding upon suitable treatment. If trichologist feels that there is underlying medical cause then trichologist will advise you to visit your GP.

After making the diagnosis, the trichologist is going to recommend the best treatment for your condition. The treatment may include the use of tropical creams or lotions as well as recommendation about your diet or lifestyle. Advise on how to better cope with condition may be given, too. It is important to note that, since trichologists are not medical doctors, they are not allowed to prescribe drugs or perform medical or surgical procedures. This is why if hair or scalp problem is due to an underlying medical condition, the course of action is to refer the patient to a dermatologist or a doctor.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A TRICHOLOGIST:

For accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for your hair & scalp problems, ensure you go to a qualified trichologist - one who is certified or registered member of reputable institution and/or association of trichologists. Apart from finishing a legitimate trichology course, these hair and scalp specialists are expected to adhere to professional code of conduct of the organization they belong to.

You don't have to have a hair problem to consult a trichologist. Many people choose to do so because they want to advise on keeping their hair and scalp in good condition and so reduce the risk of hair loss.
